Stress (Part III)
Physical Techniques to deal with stress- Exercise
The increase in heart rate, the increase in your bodies metabolism for your exercise helps to burn up the chemicals, the hormones that are secreted via the stress response. So you get rid of these. You flush those out of your system.
Another thing that happens when you exercise your body it releases what is known as an endorphin. Endorphins are kind of mood elevators. It will give you a better prospective on things and it has also been known to reduce pain.
You want to pick primarily an aerobic or cardiovascular type of exercise. By cardiovascular I mean an activity that gets your body moving and it keeps it moving in a rhythmical manner for at least 20 to 30 minute time period.
An exercise like walking, cycling, jogging, running, swimming, cross country skiing etc. Anything that keeps you moving for a sustained period of time.
Cognitive Techniques
Now we live in a more sophisticated society. We can’t just simply run away from some threat. We have to develop practical skills. We have to develop cognitive skills.
Frequently when we become stressed we lose perspective on the options that we have and we see all or none, black or white. This job is so horrible I need to quit, that’s the only solution. This relationship, this marriage is so bad – divorce.
So we see things as all or nothing, black or white, rather than realising we have many options that we need to investigate.
